Purchasing a brand new wooden stove is a great way to prepare for the drop in temperature that winter brings. After all, there is nothing better than the crackle of an authentic wood burning fire. Contrary to belief, there is no reason why a wooden stove cannot be installed by a DIY enthusiast as long as all the regulations are abided by. In order to ensure that everybody stays safe, the team here at Denton Stove Centre have decided to briefly go over some of the things you need to know to install a wood burning stove correctly…
Basic Method
Your new wood burner should be installed at the same time as the flue liner. It is important that you purchase and install a flue liner that is best suited to the type of stove that you own. After all, the efficiency of your fire will depend on it and an incorrectly installed flue can actually cause a dangerous chimney fire.
The first thing you should do after the flue has been installed and checked by a qualified engineer is to have the chimney swept so it is safe for use. Then you should secure the flue with a steel frame called a register plate, which stops loose material falling into the fireplace. It should be non-flammable and fit around the flue in order to separate the chimney from the room completely. After this, you need to attach the flue to your new stove, using something called fire rope in order to stop heat escaping, then tightening the screws in order to hold it all in place.
When your stove is almost installed, you should ensure that you seal the joints and gaps around the register joint with something called fire mastic. After this, you need to safety climb onto the roof in order to finish the job by placing a chimney pot over the flue liner.
Regulations
Since a stove insulation requires a lot of expertise, it is important that anyone attempting to DIY the job follows all the important regulations. After all, we have only gone through the method briefly and there is a lot more detail to it. The regulations go over important things like air supply, discharge of combustion waste, warnings about carbon monoxide, building protection, storing liquid fuel safely and pollution protection. In addition to this, a woodburning stove should not be installed without a building notice, which can be applied for through the building control office.
Inspection
Finally, a woodburning stove that has been installed by a DIY builder must be inspected by an individual from the local council Building Control Department. After all, safety should be a priority when it comes to fires.
Whilst a handyman could successfully install a wood burning stove, the job is often intense and requires a lot of research in order to ensure that it is done safely. That’s where we come in!
